The following is a summary of studies on the withania plant also found in GEVER GEVER
The Withania plant (Ashwagandha), mental stress and sexual potency: clinical studies
For 3,000 years, humans have used the Withania plant (also known as Ashwagandha) as a traditional remedy for many various purposes. Two of the known virtues of this plant, according to traditional belief, are in helping to treat symptoms related to anxiety and depression as well as in strengthening sexual potency. In recent years, a number of clinical studies focusing on the effects of the Whitney plant have found evidence to support this traditional claim.
One of the evidence for the Withania plant's assistance in mental stress symptoms, was found in a clinical study published in 2012. The study examined 64 subjects with a history of chronic stress. The subjects in the study were randomly assigned into two groups: the treatment group and the control group. Subjects from both groups were asked to take one capsule twice a day for a period of 60 days. In the treatment group, each capsule contained 300 mg of high-concentration full-spectrum extract from the root of the Withania plant. And in the control group, the subjects received a placebo capsule. During the treatment period, a follow-up telephone call was made to all subjects to check for treatment compliance and to note any adverse reactions. The study found that, relative to the control group, the treatment group that received the Withania root extract showed a substantial and statistically significant decrease in scores on all stress assessment scales. Cortisol levels (also known as the "stress hormone"), compared to the control group, were also substantially and statistically significantly reduced among the treatment group subjects. The findings also showed that no serious side effects were reported — reports of potential side effects found during the study were mild and, importantly, also similar in both groups (i.e., they were not caused by treatment). Based on these results, the researchers concluded that the use of Withania root extract in high concentration, relieves stress and tension safely and effectively and thus helps in improving the quality of life. [2]
The effect of the Withania plant on sexual potency can be found, among other things, in a double-blind clinical study published in 1980. The study examined 101 healthy men aged 50 to 59 and documented their conditions for an entire year. Subjects received a daily dose of 3 grams of the Withania plant. The results of the study showed that there was an improvement in the level of hemoglobin, red blood cells, and inflammatory indices among all the subjects, and 71.4% of the subjects reported an improvement in sexual function. [1,3]
Another study, published in 2013 in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, conducted a randomized controlled trial to examine the effect of the Withania plant on sexual dysfunction and infertility. The study collected data from 46 subjects with low sperm count. Subjects were divided into two groups at random, a treatment group and a control group. The subjects in the treatment group received a daily dose of 675 mg of the Withania plant, while the subjects in the control group received the same dose of a placebo. The study found that, after three months and among the subjects in the treatment group compared to the control, there was a 167% increase in sperm count, a 53% increase in sperm fluid volume, and a 57% increase in sperm motility. The findings of the study showed that the Withania plant helps treat low sperm count and infertility. [4]
